Let the idiots try and prosecute someone for those activities and watch how fast they loose their jobs when they are sued by environmental and free speech groups.  This is not 1950s Russia,  statements like the one given make me wonder how in the hell these people ever get elected to a higher office.

Reminds me of George Wallis trying to bar black students from attending public colleges in Alabama, short sighted, criminal and stupid.

The only thing that is keeping corporations (don't forget, they're people too, according to the supreme's) is
social media.
As long as we can continue to shine a disinfecting light on these practices, the better off consumers will be.
Corporations hold a lot of power, and have a lot of legislators in their back pockets;
on both sides, I might add.

Another explosion.
No it's not another unregulated fertilizer plant or a train carrying crude oil or even an oil rig in the Gulf-
it's a fracking explosion.

Surprised it hasn't happened sooner. No one killed thankfully.

Not everyone gets HBO but this documentary is making me weep. Thousands of people without safe
drinking water.
The blame lies with the president's (past and present)
the congress
the media
everyone.
Why is this being ignored? It's horrendous. And deadly.

I was wrong in the above post.
The dangers are not being ignored.
Industry-business has bought everyone's silence; democracy is in tatters, and it may not be made
whole again.
Gasland part 2 shows to me anyway, humans don't stand a chance. The fracking contamination is worldwide
and increasing.
We can go days, weeks even without food.
But without water?

According to a study published in Science (via Mother Jones) fracking is causing earthquakes world wide.
And not just small tremblers; big ones-as high as 8 and 9.

Sorry, I don't buy this one. That isn't what the article says either. It doesn't say that fracking is causing these earthquakes. It is saying that within 20 months of these major earthquakes there are smaller ones in areas where fracking is being done.

Quote

The scientists looked at three big quakes: the Tohuku-oki earthquake in Japan in 2011 (magnitude 9), the Maule in Chile in 201 (an 8.8 magnitude), and the Sumatra in Indonesia in 2012 (an 8.6). They found that, as much as 20 months later, those major quakes triggered smaller ones in places in the Midwestern US where fluids have been pumped underground for energy extraction.
This actually represents a normal happening which the article points out.

Quote

Scientists have known for a long time that areas with naturally high subsurface fluid pressures—places like Yellowstone, for example—can see an uptick in seismic activity after a major earthquake even very far away.

A complete misrepresentation of the scientific paper and Mother Jones should be ashamed. These kinds of articles, which pull the same misrepresentation that climate change deniers use, do a disservice to the cause. We have to be scrupulously honest regarding the science or the other will use that misrepresentation against us.

I also think the correlation is weak. If there is a major earthquake then sometime within months there will be an earthquake here. Even though the target areas would have already suffered from earthquakes sometime after a major earthquake.

It's not a debate. The paper doesn't say that fracking causes 8-9 Richter scale earthquakes. It says that area where fracking occurs have smaller earthquakes within 20 months of a major earthquake. The scientist already knew that areas with seismic sensitivity often had earthquakes after big ones, but somehow the reverse correlation is being made. If we fall into the same tactics, willingly or accidentally, as the anti-environmentalist we damage our credibility. We already know that they will use these kinds of things against as evidenced by Climate-gate where every small mistake brought out as an example of why global warming is a fraud.

We have to be careful with what we say because IT will be used against us if we aren't perfectly scrupulous in truth and civility.

Fracking is taking place all over the world. Can an injection well drilled into the wrong spot (close to or on top
of a fault) cause a large quake? I would say yes. There is substantial proof that they are causing numerous
smaller quakes; so I think the Mother Jones piece posted above should be considered; and not dismissed out of hand.

I've been reading a lot more lately about the Canadians fighting the tar sands.  I tend to forget that they have a lot of miles of pipeline running through their backyards as well.

The MoJo article did not bring up anything that hadn't already been suspected.  Liquid from fracking makes these places more seismically active (increases seismicity).  The part that should really be brought home is that major earthquakes anywhere in the world can trigger sympathetic seismic activity near fracking sites in the US and the effects can be felt more than a year later.

In short, fracking does destabilize areas and make them more seismically active.

Tar sands, it's environmental damage and the less than a slap on the wrist from the Canadian government
when damage is done.
Disgusting.

Thanks for that, but in the end, (no offense) it's just an op ed piece from a reporter.
