German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz,
. . . welcomed the proposal, stressing that,
. . . it was important for Germany to keep power prices stable,
. . . while at the same time creating new jobs in coal-producing regions.

Germany currently produces nearly
. . . 40% of its electricity from coal, and
. . . has failed to meet targets agreed to under the
. . . 2015 Paris climate agreement.

Phase-out starts immediately

Over the next 4 years,
. . . plant operators, including RWE and Uniper, will be asked to shut down about
. . . 12 gigawatts of capacity early in a first step, about
. . . 24 large power station units.
