Phil, there was an old man that lived across the street from us.  He had a Pinto from the mid-1970s until 2010 when he sold it to a neighbor.  He had another newer car, but the Pinto was his every day car.  He drove it all around town for over 30 years!  The gas tank never blew up once on him.

We had a Pinto in the 1970s, too.  I didn't last nearly that long.  It was not a good car for a family of 7.

There was a quality problem at the time with all auto makers.  If your car was built on a Friday you were screwed.  If it was a Friday leading into a three day weekend you were doubly screwed!   That was before the time when the big three got religion on quality control.

We never had a lick of trouble from either of ours.  We just got tired of them after so many years.  We have a  2002 and 2005 car now and unless one dies I'll wait for another half dozen years to replace the 2002 with a BEV, if not a FCV.

Like lots of other people here I have my granny's sewing machine. My washing machine is 30 years old - it came to France from the Uk when I moved her and all  had to do was change the plug. It only runs at 30° these days - but it does the job.

Also, my old man's quite old - I've kept him and I still use him from time to time !

In my house and person there are so many old items in use that sometimes I wonder how many of them could be truly associate to living a more sustainable life.

In example, we have an old refrigerator that is at least 25 years old, but obviously it's not energy efficient so far from being a gain, it's a drawback. The stove is even older as my own bed too. I'm wearing at home tennis shoes that are at least 3 years old, same as many of my household clothes, and I could keep counting.

The oldest things I have and still use are my cassettes and LP's from the 1980's of Prince, Madonna ,Michael Jackson ,etc.
I have the soundtracks to Grease ,Saturday Night Fever and Xanadu on vinyl. It's not that I don't own a CD player. I just like to play my records sometimes for the sake of nostalgia.
