I have a bunch of old VHS tapes from my mother that I no longer watch.  Is it possible to recycle them?

Post them on freecycle.org. There are a lot of people out there like me who still have their old VHS tapes and watch them. I have tons and I'd like to watch most of them again, but my VCR broke just recently. I'll be getting a new one soon. Actually, it's an old one in good condition for very cheap at a pawn shop near me with the bonus of being a dual VCR/DVD player. The last one I got at a pawn shop lasted for 7 years and cost about $20. I think I got my money's worth. I'd hate to throw away a couple hundred VHS movies just because technology has moved on and it saves me money to keep them for entertainment rather than go out or spend hundreds on newer technology.

Anyway, you could give them away on freecycle, or check with any pawn shops in your area. I still see VHS movies in the pawn shop I go to. You wouldn't get much money for selling them, but that really isn't the point, right?

I've donated several to the library here or you can post on craigs list in the free section.

I will have to check into freecycle, thanks.  My local library switched over to DVD's a few years ago and no longer accept the VHS tapes as donation.  I think they got rid of a lot of those as well.

I have a couple huge boxes full.  I am going to donate them to the local thrift store tho.  They are operated by the church that helps people in need.  They also have a food bank that gives many people food each month that otherwise are struggling to eat.  At the thrift shop, they take the donations and then sell them real cheap.  Movies sell for 25 or 50 cents I think.  They are non profit and it goes to their other programs for needy people.  I feel good about donating any extra items to them!

Do you have any church run programs around you or even any thrift shops that will sell it cheap to people less fortunate?

There are some here but I have never seen VHS tapes there.  I will have to look again and maybe ask, maybe they have some other way of donating them.  Thanks!

I've got farmer friends who used the tapes as an alternative to scarecrows. Instead of making a scrarecrow for birds, they use the old vhs tapes to scare them. It is effective when the rice plants already had there fruits. For unknown reason birds are scared when wind blows to the tapes hanging around the rice paddles and leave the place.

Donate them to the Goodwill or to your local thrift store. I know that the Goodwill will give you a receipt with your donation so you can write it off if you want to on your taxes. You can also recycle them at local e-waste events in your town.

The noise and the sun shining on the tapes blowing in the wind scares them. That's why many people use pie pans
in their gardens too.

Posting about those tapes online is a good idea since there could be VHS collectors out there or artists who are using those for their crafts.
And of course donating them is  really a  good idea. ;)

Freecycle is a good option. My mom is one to still buy them, actually! (albeit for about $0.25 a piece!!)  Childrens movies are probably the best to get rid of as many grandparents still own a VCR and will want them for when the grandkids come to visit

What about old VHS tapes that dont work anymore?   Does anyone know of a good way to dispose of them?   We have several that arent' worth donating as only like the first 2 minutes of the tape works.

haha, nothing wrong with it! You can find VHS tapes so cheap/ free why would you not get them if you can play them vs buying a new DVD costing $10-$30.

I did some research online and found this:

The tote bags on here look really cute!  Some people are just so talented.  You would have to pay the shipping to get them the other places so if you have a lot of tapes maybe you could just send a little at a time.  I was sending my old tapes to the goodwill this weekend and they ended up at my sister's house instead.     That works too.

I was amazed at those tote bags - they look nothing like their original materials, and they're so stylish. Just goes to show what you can recycle if you really, really want to. Where do people get their ideas from? I have a great idea for re-using our old VHS tapes, but my husband won't keep still while I strangle him with them, unfortunately.

Haha that post really made me laugh!  I know someone who crochets tote bags out of plastic grocery bags, so I guess the VHS tapes are the same idea.  IT really is quite creative though!  And VHS is hard to break so I bet they are super durable too.

I crochet tote bags out of the plastic bags you get from stores. I love the way she uses the old tapes. The bags are cute. I read on her blog that in 2008 she was diagnosed with breast cancer. I sure hope and pray she is able to live a long life.
