Recently we replaced our Like system for reputation points to with a up/down vote system which now allows Shifters to vote down posts that they find offensive, deliberately inaccurate or otherwise harmful to our green community.

The main differences with the up/down vote system are..
  • Users can down vote each other's posts.
  • Names of users who've left up or down votes are hidden in the new system (avoids conflicts).
  • More than 10 down votes and a user will be banned. Down votes help identify trouble users to Moderators.
  • Of course, you can only down vote a user once.
  • With like system the names of users who clicked like are listed.
So which system do you prefer? I prefer the Like system since 99.9% of our members post useful info and the like system also seems more "friendly" IMO. :)

Please, add your vote above. Feel free to leave questions/comments below.

I voted twice.
. . . if 10 people vote "UP" and one person votes "DOWN" 10 times,
. . . what have you got?

Naa this forum software is 10 years old they've thought of pretty much everything.

Moderators have more power to affect a persons reputation but that because we trust you guys to use power wisely. Members have a bit more freedom with giving positive rep points but negative points have many restrictions and guards against abuse.

Also Pro Shifters and Verteran Shifters have a bit more freedom but also depends of if they they themselves have good reputation or they are restricted as well.

I like it. Down votes let's the community be aware of the troublemakers. A lot of sites have "like" buttons but
hardly any have "dislike" buttons.

I like it. While down voted members are really rare right now, as the forum grows troublemakers could possibly become more common. A quarter percent of 4,000 is more people than a quarter percent of 400, and it's good to have a way for the community to screen people out. Plus, it doesn't change "liking" someone's posts or boosting reputation. Just changes the buttons. It's like the system Reddit uses. Works for me.

Good points ladies. Looks like will keep the up/down votes. Will make final decision in a few days.

I think the up and down is a good idea.  As the ladies above pointed out, it can make people aware of troublemakers.  It can hopefully prevent or at least make it easier to remove spam too.  I am new here and have not seen any spam yet, but I know it happens all over the Internet.  It would also give you the power to decide if the down votes are a reason to give warnings or if the person just posted things that others didn't agree with.  I say keep the up and down.

I found it confusing! The main forum has the "up/down" system, whereas blog articles still retain the old "like" system. Why is that?

I would personally prefer a system that supports a voter being compelled to state a specific and viable reason why they voted a certain way. I feel there should be more accountability in such matters, especially if it can result in a member being banned. Whether it is anonymous or not then makes this less of an issue as the outcome will be based more upon the strength and accuracy of the argument rather than who is actually saying it. With such a system, the voter can also be given the option to remain hidden.  B)
