I just joined here the other day and have to say if the government is hiding this type of effect on our troops what can they be hiding on all of us? This makes me upset and this tends to be why I do not trust anything the government hands out as a report to any of us. They are nothing more then hiding the truth because it makes them look bad.

As horrible as it was, back in the Viet Nam days, the news coverage was on every single day.
We don't see anything anymore from Afghanistan or the previous (thank you) war in Iraq; except in an
occasional documentary.
It's not that we want to view it, but it would bring the war home; make people more aware of it-
it may have ended sooner-more protests against it.

The war was led for the wrong reasons. I know the war should be wound down by now. However, it did manage to get rid of a dictator who was outrageous to his citizens. Not only that it managed to get rid of one of the worst terrorist the world has ever seen.

Update-
After decades of water contamination and up to a million military personal and their families affected-
they finally passed a health care bill for these folks.
"The Caring for Camp Lejeune Families Act of 2012 will require the Department of Veterans Affairs
to provide health care for those with certain diseases and conditions resulting from exposure to the contaminated water."
Certain?
How many will be denied treatment because they don't think it resulted from exposure???
And it only took them 55 years to do it. Wow.
Every-one's hands are dirty on this over the years; republicans, democrats and the military itself.
Caring for our military personnel? Not even close.
Article here.

Is it just me or is it that every time the government screws up on something they use the excuse of national security? It always has and it always will be bull crap. Regardless this is still ridiculous. I hope they can keep better tabs on things from now on.
They use the phrase "national security" because it sounds a lot more palatable than "government cover up" or "covering our own butts".
And how about the news media? If Kim Kardashian waxes her legs or buys new underwear, it's front page news but environmental emergencies that kill people and make them sick don't get viewers to tune in.

get her own tv show? "Gomer" icon goes here_________.
Planet Green started out gangbusters-great shows about everything eco friendly. But no one watched, ratings
took a nose dive and now it's all trash. (I had it on cable for a time, but cancelled it once they started showing
nothing but reruns from other discovery channels-many shows were cancelled too, so I stopped watching.)
The main 3 stations have about 12 minutes to tell us what's up.
fixed news is lies, so don't bother.
cnn doesn't get their information correct, so forget them too.
msnbc is all politics.
PBS covers a lot of stories otherwise not talked about and of course, the net.
Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, New York Times, Huffington Post, Treehugger, Grist.
And of course-US.
We have many members here that bring news that affects us and our ecosystems. (And thank you for posting them-all!)

The Janey Ensminger bill (named after a 9 year old girl who died of leukemia from the tainted water)
goes to Obama for his signature, after it passed by a voice vote on Tuesday; 8/31/12.

Turns out; it goes all the way back to 1953.
"In a letter to the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry said computer modeling shows that drinking water in the residential Hadnot Point area was unsafe for human consumption as far back as 1953."

Update-
From the article-
"A building once used as storage the toxic insecticide DDT later housed a day care and nursery;
PCB-laden transformer oil was routinely spread on roads to keep down the dust.
One measurement taken in 1982 found levels of TCE, of 1,400 parts per billion in the base's drinking water.
That is five times the levels discovered around the same time in Woburn, Mass., scene of a childhood leukemia cluster."
Will it ever be totally cleaned up? I have my doubts.
