I am a supporter of the occupy movement. I think that there are many things wrong with this country. Some of them started in the later years of the Clinton Administration. Deregulation of Glass-Billey-Steagall was one of the biggest mistakes we ever made. But, then the Bush Administration ran with it. It wasn't just deregulation. It was unregulation.
One of the biggest problems is how much power lobbyists have taken. We should be appalled that they are writing legislation at the federal and state level and having elected officials present it for them. The bankruptcy bill, Medicare Part D both were written by lobbyists.
While I support Occupy, I have some problems with the movement especially the turn towards violence in Oakland. I do not think thrashing a restaurant and vandalizing the mayor's office is going to win over any support. Occupy Oakland and SF are having problems with the Black Block Anarchists. These leeches attach themselves to protests and disrupt them. They never protest on their own, but they enjoy screwing up everyone else's cause.
Also, I am in disagreement that they should remain leaderless. I think the problems with Occupy Oakland are a reflection of how not having a leader can lead to chaos. I don't know if the same problems exist with other Occupy groups. But I believe you need leaders to keep focused and to keep things together.
One thing is for sure. You can see how the problems with the environment, the climate change deniers, the foreclosures, the student college loan crisis, education underfunding, crime and everything else has its roots in the same thing. It's a matter of priorities and what we stand for. I wonder how much money local governments would have to keep our water clean and to fight crime if tax cuts and giveaways hadn't drained the coffers?
