Many of us already practice green living and saving energy at home. The next step is to make the workplace greener as well.
When you do not live that far from your workplace, consider to walk, cycle, or use public transport to go to work instead of using your car. When you have to travel a significantly longer distance, opt for public transport or carpooling. Do you like to use your own car? Avoid traffic jams by leaving earlier or later to reach your work. It is better to drive at a speed of a 120 km/hour, than get stuck in a jam and use more gas.
Bringing your own coffee mug to work is better than using disposable plastic cups. No overflowing waste bins, and all those different mugs enliven the workplace. But when using disposable cups, drink more cups of coffee or tea from the same cup.
Lunch: do you take your lunch with you from home? Pack it in a container and do not use a plastic or paper sack. When you buy your lunch at work, do not buy too much, only what you think you can finish and try to pick food with minimal packing.
When leaving your workplace for lunch, do not forget to switch off the lights and switch your computer to standby mode, or if possible switch it off. This also applies if you have to attend a meeting.
Must you print all your received emails? You can save information in a folder. If you like to print use two sided printing to save paper and print in black and white.
Garbage collection: separate return of waste materials saves raw materials and energy, and prevents a lot of pollution. Every kilogram of waste not going to pass the incinerator saves money. Therefore, separate paper and glass, collect plastic apart and if possible organic waste.
When you live further from work, ask your employer about the possibilities of working a day at home. When you have a meeting for which you have to travel far, consider a conference call.
Discuss saving energy and green living with your colleagues and employer. Together you certainly will get more ideas to make the workplace greener.
