BP said Monday it has positioned its wellhead replacement cap within 40 feet of its gushing Gulf of Mexico oil well and hopes to have it locked in place by Tuesday.
"We will attempt to latch it in place and prepare for an integrity test [by Tuesday]," Doug Suttles, BP's head of exploration and production in North America, told reporters on a conference call. The new cap had been lowered to within 300 feet of the mile-deep wellhead earlier in the day.
BP hopes the new cap will fully contain the estimated 35,000 to 60,000 barrels of oil flowing daily from the well, which ruptured April 20.
